About Defect
Defect, Spell, designed by None first released in september 2026 in the set Skybound Odyssey.
Defect best fits a slow Yzmir control or ramp deck that can reliably reach seven mana and wants to swing a crucial expedition by stealing an opposing high-value Character, especially against large late-game threats; however, its Fleeting restriction, very high cost, and dependence on the opponent having a worthwhile target make it too situational for most competitive lists. `Off You Go!` is generally the better card because it costs much less and provides immediate, reliable tempo by sending a Character to Reserve, while Defect is only preferable when permanently borrowing a powerful Character for the current expedition is worth the extra cost. Defect could be a strong one-of or experimental inclusion in a ramp-heavy Yzmir control deck, but it should not normally see play as a core card.
