About Merlin
Merlin, Character, designed by None first released in September 2026 in the set Whispers from the Maze.
Merlin fits a Yzmir control/tempo deck that wants to disrupt the opponent's expedition by repeatedly returning their key Character to Reserve; Scout also makes it useful as an inexpensive Reserve play when spending six mana is too slow. It is strongest in slower lists that can capitalize on the tempo loss or interact with cards in Reserve, rather than in proactive Yzmir builds that need immediate board presence. For pure, efficient removal, `Off You Go!` is generally the better option because it returns a Character to Reserve for less mana and acts immediately, while Merlin earns consideration only when a reusable Character effect and the Scout flexibility justify its six-cost body. Merlin is playable but niche: include it as a small number of copies in dedicated control/Reserve-interaction decks, not as a default competitive staple.
