About Sam & Spook
Sam & Spook, Hero, designed by None first released in September 2026 in the set Roots of Corruption and was printed exactly in 3 different ways.
Sam & Spook best fits a Yzmir discard-and-recursion or control deck that can reliably be first player, repeatedly discard cards, and exploit the Reserve—especially decks with cheap cards, strong “when discarded” effects, or cards that are happy to be replayed later; it is much less attractive in aggressive decks, decks that frequently go second, or lists that cannot reach six cards in the discard pile quickly. Its zero cost is excellent, and the permanent ability can generate substantial value, but the payoff is slow and its first-player restriction makes it inconsistent, so I would not consider it an automatic staple. There is no universally better replacement because it occupies a fairly unusual role, but if your goal is simply card selection, cheaper and more reliable draw/filtering cards are better, while if your deck does not specifically use discard and Reserve synergies, a more proactive Yzmir hero such as Akesha is generally stronger; Sam & Spook should see play only as a delib
