Tengu fits a low-curve, tempo-oriented Ordis deck that can reliably capitalize on Rush—especially one packed with cheap follow-up plays, strong “when played” effects, or cards that let you turn a second immediate play into a decisive expedition swing; its Ascend payoff makes it best when advancing the Expedition is more valuable than simply adding raw stats. It is less appealing in slower, top-heavy lists, where holding mana and cards to Rush will be inconsistent. There is no universally “better” replacement because Tengu’s value is specifically its Rush-to-Ascend conversion, but a card with stronger baseline expedition stats or a more reliable advance effect is preferable if your deck cannot consistently follow it with another play. Tengu should see play as a synergistic role-player rather than an automatic staple: include it when your curve and game plan make Rush easy to trigger, and skip it when it is too often just an underpowered two-cost card.
